Seckel Syndrome: case report of functional motor recovery using proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation/Kabat Method

Introduction: Seckel syndrome (SCKL) is a heterogeneous autosomal recessive disorder, the major characteristic of which microcephalic osteodysplastic dwarfism, defined as severe intrauterine growth retardation, short stature, microcephaly, bird-like profile, retroverted chin and forehead, prominent nose, mental retardation other congenital anomalies. Objective: Evaluate therapeutic effect proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation/Kabat method (PNF/KM) for functional recovery in SCKL. Methods: A pre-treatment evaluation was performed, followed by an intervention involving PNF/KM. Sessions were held twice week ten weeks (total: 20 sessions), post-treatment evaluation. The evaluator therapist blinded. assessment instruments Lawton & Brody's Activities Daily Living (ADL) Scale, Disabilities Arm, Shoulder Hand (DASH), Short Physical Performance Battery, Timed Up Go test upper limb muscle strength using digital dynamometer. Results: No significant changes found regarding ADL Scale or DASH. However, gains achieved activities that require biomechanical actions shoulder, arm wrist. Regarding improvement variables stabilization, strength, balance agility. An execution speed test. following intervention. Conclusion: This study showed PNF/KM not able to improve performance on daily living, but improvements with regards balance, agility limbs lower limbs.
